The term Deacon literally means to serve. It refers to an attendant, a waiter, or one who ministers to another. As a matter of fact, the first Deacons were called to serve food to widows in the church (Acts 6:1-6), and we continue to place serving communion to shut-ins in the hands of these able body of men. However, the duties go well beyond that at First Christian.
We have deacons who fill vital roles in virtually every area in the life of the congregation – youth department, building and grounds maintenance, transportation needs, community outreach events, hospitality, and finance ministry, just to name a few. We like to think of our Deacons as the Lead Servants of the congregation. Through their dedication they serve at the forefront of advancing God's Kingdom in Carmi and as far as we can reach.
